Greenhouse Guide

Choosing a Greenhouse

If you are a gardener you will enjoy the benefits of having a greenhouse in your yard. There are a few things to consider before tackling the task of making or purchasing your greenhouse.

Where the greenhouse is located on your property is the first need to be addressed. Choosing a flat area that is mostly out in the open and devoid of much overhang from trees would be a good choice. Choose a spot that has adequate drainage for plantings that will be in the soil within the greenhouse if you so choose that method.

The strength you decide for your greenhouse structure will determine the amount of frame support it will need for protection from the wind. The size of your greenhouse is another important consideration.

Keep in mind that the height of your greenhouse should accommodate your height plus a few extra inches. If this is your first experience of owning a greenhouse, you will probably choose a small unit. Only time will tell if you will be spending a few hours or many hours a week in your greenhouse so remember if your first choice is a little small, you can always add on at a later time.

The two most popular greenhouse shapes are the Apex and the Lean-to. The Apex style offers doors on one side and the Lean-to style costs less and uses another structure such as the side of the house as a brace.

You may choose to have an aluminum frame that will not rust and is virtually maintenance free. Keep good ventilation by having adequate roof vents and it is suggested that the glazing be 20% of the square footage of the floor in the greenhouse.
