Tropical House Plants

Add a Unique Flair with Tropical House Plants

As any avid gardener or homemaker can tell you, house plants can be a wonderful addition to the decor of any home or office. Furthermore, tropical house plants can add a unique flair to a decorating scheme that will intrigue guests and give the room a fresh feeling. However, there are many things to keep in mind when purchasing and taking care of tropical house plants. I will briefly address a few of the more important aspects here.

First of all, it is important to research many different types of plants in order to find one that will thrive in your area. If you are going to be growing these plants outside, keep in mind that cold winters can severely damage most tropical house plants, so they should be moved inside during cold months. If you are a novice gardener, you should start with something hardy that will require less care to avoid disappointment.

Proper lighting should also be taken into consideration, and the room that you choose to grow your plants should have windows to provide sunlight. However, plants placed next to windows can be damaged by the sunlight that is magnified by the glass. This can be avoided by using thin curtains or choosing locations that receive indirect natural lighting.

Watering should be done once or twice a week when the soil feels dry to the touch. Watering more than this can cause severe damage to the root system of the plant as well as creating risk for fungal damage and other plant diseases.Fertilization should occur year round, either by use of a time-release fertilizer blend or by lightly fertilizing over time. During the spring growing season fertilization should be increased slightly.

Keep in mind that some plants require very specific care and not all varieties can be treated the same. Research each type of plant that you are interested in and take care to check on them often after planting and you should be able to enjoy all the benefits of tropical house plants throughout the year.
