Organic Vegetable Gardening
Fresh Nutritious Organic Vegetables
In order to make your garden organic, eliminate the use of all
commercial chemicals. There are natural alternatives to get rid of
garden pests and problems. You will also have to build up your soil.
The soil around your home probably has been treated with chemical
fertilizer and weed killer; both are harmful to your health.
First, choose your garden plot. You will need some stones or lumber to
build up garden beds. Garden beds raise your garden off the soil that
already exists and give you a way to fill your garden with fresh
organic soil. Bags of organic soil may be purchased at any local garden
center.
To enhance your soil, add worm castings, a natural fertilizer. This may
be purchased at an organic farm, local CSA (Consumer Supported
Agriculture) or online.
Be sure to look for heirloom varieties when choosing your seeds or
purchasing your vegetable plants. These are plants that have existed
for over a hundred years and will allow you to save seeds for the next
gardening season. The genetically engineered variety readily available
in most stores today often will not provide seeds for future use, nor
are they as beneficial nutritionally since science and chemicals have
altered them from their original state.
The seed packet or tag in your vegetable plant will tell you how and when to plant it, so keep those instructions.
