Planting a Vegetable Garden: It’s All In the Design

Planting a vegetable garden can be fun, relaxing and therapeutic. But before you start one, make sure you have the right vegetable garden design in mind. The design of your garden is important because it will determine the success and manageability of your plants and allow you to see the fruits of your labor for many seasons.

To begin, determine the list of vegetables you want and try to learn as much about them as possible. Choose a sunny area in your yard with easy access to water. Dig up the dirt to break up compacted soil and to remove any weeds or unwanted roots, otherwise these will come back to haunt you later on.

It is wise to plant in beds as opposed to rows, which allow you to concentrate your compost on the area where your plants need it the most. Always allow plenty of room for each plant to grow, otherwise the roots will crowd and not allow for proper growth.

As a general rule, you should always put the tallest plants in the back, the shortest in the front and the remaining in between. This will assure you have a nice layout and that your garden is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Finally, don’t forget that a vegetable garden needs extra attention with water. Now just sit back and let the fruit of your labor come to life.
