Decking Boards
Decking Boards
For hundreds of years decks have traditionally been made from wood based materials. With the advent of the modern age decks are no longer limited to wood boards for construction. A deck is simply any space that is separated or separates a portion of space within your garden or yard. Decking can be large or small, built on stilts or at ground level with only a defined border distinguishing them from your yard.
Wood has been a favorite choice among builders for many years because of its durability, low cost and strength of design. Wood comes in a variety of natural tones and colors and can easily be stained or painted. Even so wood boards used for decks have draw backs. They are susceptible to climate changes especially moisture, and because wood is technically alive when its being used to build, it is known to expand and contract up to a 1/8" per year on average.
Because of this wooden boards can creak and squeak over time as the constant pressure of movement begins to wear against nails and screws. Also while wood is easy to paint or stain for a range of color choices, over time wood boards need to be recoated as wear and tear "rubs" the color off. Still wood is a favorite choice among many because of its beautiful appearance and distinction.
For those who choose not to use wood to build their decks here are some ideas from a wide assortment of decking boards that are available in a variety of modern materials.
Vinyl boards and composite planks (plastics and other materials) have become extremely popular in late years. These types of decking boards offer unmatched durability and resistances to weather damage. Decks made with modern materials never require staining or painting as the entire board is color inside and out. Such materials offer a wide range of choices, though for some lack the visual aesthetics of wood.
Concrete reinforced with steel and Kevlar netting has become a popular alternative as a decking material. Concrete boards can be produced in virtually any color or texture, are impermeable to climate conditions and are visually beautiful. The only drawback when choosing concrete as a decking material is the cost involved as it is considerably higher than either wood or modern material boards.
No matter what type of material you choose your deck can be a beautiful long lasting addition to your home and garden.
