Bamboo Flooring - The Enviromentally Friendly Flooring option
Choosing Bamboo Flooring
Looking for an
environmentally friendly flooring material? Try bamboo. A rapidly
renewable resource, bamboo takes 3-5 years to grow. Hardwoods, by
comparison, take a minimum of 20 years to grow to maturity.
What are some advantages of bamboo flooring?
• Bamboo is a LEED certified material, meaning it is “green.”
• Bamboo does not warp when it gets wet, like wood floors.
• Bamboo only requires a vacuum or dusting to keep it clean.
• Bamboo, like hardwoods, is beneficial for people with allergies; it doesn’t attract dust or dirt.
• Bamboo doesn’t need to be replaced as often as other flooring.
Bamboo comes in strips, planks, and tiles and can be installed in three
ways: Nail-down and glue-down are the most popular. Some manufacturers
offer floating, or tongue-and-groove pieces.
Colors range from natural to espresso, depending on the manufacturer. A
process called pressure steaming is used to give bamboo its darker
color. The darker the bamboo, the longer it has been heated, and the
softer it is. In high traffic areas, the sealant will need to be
replaced more often. High heels can also mar the finished surface, so
you may want to try your stocking feet!
There are many reasons to use bamboo flooring: Bamboo is a rapidly
renewable resource, it does not warp when it gets wet; it is easy to
care for and lasts for many years. There are a few color and
installation options, which make bamboo an attractive choice for anyone!
