Light Bulbs
Seeing Light Bulbs in a New Light
A
lighting fixture is only as good as the bulb it contains. People will
often spend hours looking for the perfect lamp or chandelier; yet give
no consideration to the bulb they use. If the only time you think about
your light bulbs is when they burn out, then here are some things you
should consider:
The first decision you have is whether to choose a halogen or
fluorescent light bulb. Halogen bulbs are the cheaper option, but they
have a shorter life span. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) are more
expensive, but will last longer.
The next decision is whether you are going to use a standard or
specialty bulb. You can find bulbs that look like candle flames, have a
tint or are made of sculptured glass. While specialty bulbs will not
work in all situations, try putting them in accent pieces to add
interest to a room.
Finally, think about wattage. It is amazing how a room can be
transformed by creating more or less light. If you are unsure, buy a
few different bulbs and see which one best enhances the mood and
function of the room.
Remember: While the type of light you choose needs to function in the
room, it is still a design element. Moods can be created and room
colors altered by simply changing a bulb. The right light bulb can be
the cheapest and most important accent piece you put in a room
