Today's Surf Clothing
Surfing has changed
little over the years , but surf clothing has. No longer will jean
cutoffs, old tee shirts and rubber thongs be acceptable .
Surfers once wore a bulky wet suit in colder waters ,which restricted
movement and wasn't very stylish. Now guys and gals can surf in
lightweight suits made in a wide array of colors and designs.
There are “farmer john”suits that only cover the torso and legs, or the
spring “shorty “suit that has short sleeves and short legs. Another
option is the jacket top only or vest with shorts. Wearing just the
lower part as shorts or pants with a tee shirt is still one more way to
surf with some protection.
Rash guards are long or short sleeve shirts made from spandex and
either nylon or polyester that protects against the suns UV rays. As
the name implies, the shirt fabric prevents rashes from the stings of
jellyfish, chafing while moving on the board and that awful sunburn
that can ruin a day of fun at the beach.
Board shorts are the third most important functional fashion accessory.
Surfing is fun and looking good is part of the sport. Made mainly from
nylon with pockets that drain, rubber pull tabs and lace up fronts.
Sandals, flip flops and thongs are made more durable with leather for the sand and surf that they will encounter.
While surfing has changed very little, modern surf clothing has, with fashion and function to please everyone.
